Interesting project. personally I believe that life exists out there (we would be verry stupid to assume otherwise) wether it is inteligent or not is another story. I'm not a ufo buff, I believe that alen life would be verry mistaken to visit us at this current (physical/psycological) evolutionary junction. We have our own problems to tend to instead of worrying about other life. Don't get me wrong I sincerely hope that we find something out there, (fill in your deity here) do I hope so. I just believe that this is kindove a wrong time to have pen pals that are light years away.
On another note I feel that the exploration of space should be a verry important step for our species as a whole, and not to be taken lightly. There are technological and medical advances waiting to be discovered on other worlds/asteroids/etc that would help mankind beyond imagination if we could only get there to find them. But we need to get over our petty squabbling before we can truly succede in space travel.
