Personal background
I'm a 41 year old IT manager from Finland. My biggest interest in science is cosmology. Thinking about the universe makes you really stretch the limits of what you can imagine. I recommend it for anyone who thinks he/she is awfully important :-) Not to mention thinking that our universe is just one of the infinite number...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home first of all because I want to do at least something to advance mankind's most important task. Also, it's nothing away from me, since it only runs instead of idle loop on the processor. The idle loop is the process that gets calculated most of all in the world, and it does nothing at all.

We definitely should broadcast too. Having contact with an another civilization is the most important thing for mankind. It's not the most urgent one, theory of everything and cure for cancer are more urgent for example. But it's unlikely that we get an answer to our message in the next few hundred years, so we need to broadcast now that we already can do that. If someone answers, we will by then be so much more advanced than today, that we hear it too.
