I think the SETI project is a great opportunity for anyone to be involved in research and the search for other life.
I don't know by what other practical means we can try to communicate with others and or other dimensions in time, space or otherwise but SETI reaching out to the home computer user groups to make it's goals practical and achievable are a step in the right direction.
More of these sort of (CPU crunching) projects should come forward for open community assistance and participation.
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
