Personal background
We are a couple in Ontario with an interest in cutting-edge science and technology. We have been interested in space for our whole lives, and have read many science fiction books ( mostly by credible authors such as Isaac Assimov.)
When I discovered SETI @Home we thought it was a great idea, and wanted to help out, so here we are!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We both believe that there must be extraterrestrial life, due to the extraordinary number of worlds that must exist. We also believe that there is no advanced life near our solar system, or we would have found them - or they us - by now. The possible benefit of such an encounter include new technologies and beliefs, as well as shattering the beliefs that we are superior to all life forms, and that we are alone. It would force us to negotiate with our equal - or superior! The greatest danger that I anticipate is an interplanetary war. Whether we won or lost, the consequences of such an event are staggering, and far reaching.
I believe that sending a beacon would be a friendly gesture, and should be set up as such - "Hello, this is who we are and what we are interested in".
I run seti@home because I believe in the project, and we are supporting it in a way that we can. I think it is a great idea, as there are a lot of people who would love to help out and this is a great way to do it. The untapped power of personal computers around the world is being put to a good use at last.
