Profile: The Jedi Alliance - Noel G Mistula

Personal background
G\\'day!,

My name is Noel. I consider myself a bit of a computer geek. A geek
that likes sports a lot...I use to play college basketball (even though
I\\'m not quite a tall guy, I still shot some hoops in my backyard nowadays)
and table tennis (collegiate level as well). At least once a week I ride my bicycle in one of the many bike paths in Sydney. See my website ngm.id.au for more info.
Still follows some talks/seminars about SETI in the Sydney (Australia)
area. I completed my BSECE from Mindanao Polytechnic State College in the Philippines in 1986.
I completed my MEngSc major in Info.Sc.
from the University of New South Wales, Australia in 1991. I started my
MS in Applied Mathematical Sciences in 1989 but did
not complete it :(..bummer.

I only run GNU/Linux (www.Slackware.com my favorite)
at home. I have a tiny little contribution to the qmail (www.qmail.org) community
in filtering out spam/junk attachments to emails :) I love traveling/driving
around the Australian countryside. Learning more about the Australian flora
and fauna aside from enjoying the scenery...I\\'m currently an IT Network
Manager in one of the largest apartment/condominium builder and
developer (www.meriton.com.au) in Sydney (we only use GNU/Linux on
all our servers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes, I do believe extraterrestrial life exist. It ranges from microbes to
lifeforms similar to humans. \\"...it would be a lot of waste in space\\" if
we are alone in the vastness of the Universe. It really depends on how we
develop further our technology in searching for ET. We may not discover ET
in our lifetime. But our lifetime cannot even be counted as one tick with
respect to the clock of the Universe... For every endeavour you make, there
are always benefits and dangers. It\\'s up to us on how to control/use
such discovery.

2) I think we should transmit a beacon using any method possible. Just
like the movie \\"Contact\\", we should embed mathematical sequences or similar
information because that\\'s, I think, easier to understand/figure out.
I follow the StarGate SG1 TV series. And some of the ideas presented
may be possible. Who knows the stargate device may be possible as well :)
Not in our lifetime though.

3) I\\'ve been fascinated with science and space since I saw the movie Starwars.
And I think running SETI@home is one way to contribute something. Besides,
I don\\'t want to waste CPU cycles on my GNU/Linux box. The project,
to say the least, is excellent. I wish I could help more.
