Personal background
Im just another finnish student interested in theoretical space physics and the universe in general (no, I dont study it though, im just inspired by f.ex. Steven Hawkings's books). I started using SETI@home because my computers are on and online 24/7 and they really had no other fun to play with during idle time than drawing oh so pretty fractals as screensavers. Read about me more in my website @ http://www.kopteri.net/koti/joel.peltonen .
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I actually am quite certain that intellegent ET life exists, but also I think that the likelieness of humans actually finding them is slim to none, mostly because I belive that background radiation and the big bang radio waves drown single signals quite efficiently. Even though, I'm facinated by the idea of using the idle enormous computing power for even the slightest chance of discovery and sicence.

2. I do thing we should make a beacon that transmit pulses. Even though the time it will take for the signal to reach other solar sytems is very, very long, there would be the mere experience of building one and the hope it provides that would make a beacon neccecary. Well, I think that if a beacon was to be constructed, It should send out even pulses, or use a form of mathematical language.

3) Because I can. I dont really need all the power of my computers, so why not give some of it for a good cause. And I find the idea actually quite welcome. SETI@home could also find pulses from other things than aliens, which might prove vital in our knowledge of the universe.
