Personal background
Um, hello, this thing on? Well then, I'm sure by now you've read my name, so this little space goes to those other things. Currently I find my place of residence in Akron, OH, former rubber capital of the world, and now the city with one of the top Polymer Science programs in the world. As luck would have it, at the age of 23 I'm due to start attending Grad School there in the fall. Besides working on maintaining my fellowship, I provide a sounding board to friends, deal with minor computer problems, love to get in the odd game of billiards, and enjoy the online community in Neverwinter Night's Dysotopia mod.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Hmm... guess I'll run the questions above here. Unoriginal, certainly uninspiring, and yet succinct, no? Extraterrestrial life almost assuredly exists, simply because of the plethora of planets out there. Maybe we'll make the first discovery, but I think it's arrogant to assume that we will discover them and not they us.
Sure, send a beacon. If a wave of intergalactic murders descend upon us we'll probably look back and say... "Hmm, maybe not our shining moment of triumph." Then again, we may be enlightened by a benevolent species. Who knows.
I run SETI because my computer sits around, and could easily be crunching on something. It's definitely a worthy project, and ultimately if only one of all of us was ever marginally successful, it would honestly be a triumph we could all readily share in for contributing.
