Personal background
I am a biologist. I run a toxicology research laboratory in Ottawa, Canada where I investigate the adverse effects of inhaled contaminants. I paint, garden, read, and meditate, and when I have some real money in my pocket, I like to fly an aeroplane.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life is almost a scientific certainty, minus direct evidence. The best indirect evidence of extraterrestrial intelligent life in my mind is the fact that we are here to talk about it. The universe is just so vast and old that it seems improbable that Earth is the only place where life emerged. Chances are that somewhere else than Earth, presently or at some time in the past or in the future, similar conditions were, are, or will be assembled to allow intelligent life to emerge. This being said, the chances for us at the moment of having a conversation with inhabitants from other parts of the universe are small, very small indeed, unless they themselves have a better way for doing this. But it would be fabulous just to know that someone is out there. This is truly the ultimate scientific frontier. To find out if someone is out there. Our best shot at the moment is listening at the sky. Thanks to the folks at SETI@home for this opportunity to contribute, if only a little to this great endeavour.
