Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe there is life elsewhere in this vast universe of ours. It is inconceivable to me that this would be the only planet with life.

I don't know about transmitting a beacon for others to find. There are too many variables and I am not sure our civilization is advanced enough at this point to deal with a non-Earth oriented culture. There is also the possibility that we could be easily conquered should we find an unfriendly traveler.

On the other hand, if a civilization is advanced enough to travel space in short periods of time, they are probably not interested in our barbarian culture for anything other than a tourist attraction (like the zoo) or possibly as a source of food (we eat what we consider to be inferior creatures, what would make us think that is a trait unique to terrestrials), or, once again just like us, maybe they would want to capture a few examples of life on this planet and use us for experiments and research.

I think it is rather ironic that the excitement I feel for encountering a non-terrestrial culture is overshadowed by the fear that they may have some of our not-so-great traits.
