Profile: Antony Interlandi

Personal background
I have been in the IT industry since 1983 and a member of SETI@home since 1999.
As a person I enjoy keeping up with the latest Physics and Astronomical information.
At home I currently use a Gallilian Telescope to observe the night sky.

Being in the Southern Hemisphere is great for star gazing and as soon as the missus
allows, I will be upgrading my scope to a Schmitt Cassegrain 16" with digital
image capture so that I may enjoy the view of the heavens from both my PC and
my Sony Projector in the lounge.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If you follow the Drake equation to the letter then the Universe is teaming with
life. I first encountered the Drake equation when Carl Sagan produced his show
Cosmos as a follow on to his book of the same name.

With current advances in technology, I believe that it will not be long before
we have "Warp Drive". The development of Zero Point Energy will, I believe be the
solution to the question of a power source sufficiently large enough to be capable
of generating a strong enough field to warp the fabric of space. If Stephen
Hawking is correct then we should be able to compress space in front of our
vessel and expand space behind it. The vessel will travel in a bubble of normal
space obeying all of Einsteins Laws. This is how I believe we will colonize the
Galaxy.

Perhaps, until we understand more about this technology, we as a race should refrain
from broadcasting to much specific information about ourselves. This I know, some
might argue is a little too late as we have been broadcasting radio signals of
reasonable strength since the 30's

I enjoy participating in this search because I believe that contact is inevitable,
and if I can assist in bringing this event closer then I will be elated to have
been a part of this team.

My one concern regarding this search is that it is possible that any sufficiently
advanced civilization will have found a means of communication that is faster
and more reliable that Radio. If this is the case then we may miss out on all
the really exciting stuff until we develop further, ourselves. Calling on another
Science Fiction term, I refer to Subspace Communications where by using subspace
as a carrier, Faster Than Light communication is possible.

A clue to this may reside in the way Gravity seems to affect all particles
simultaneously regardless of distance even though the inverse square rule governs
the size of the influence.
