Personal background
I was born in 1976 and right now I am studying Electronical Engineering at the Technical University of Aachen, Germany.
(For those not familiar with foreign names: I am male.)
I am interested in almost everything, especially things related to the progress of mankind (technical stuff, history, politics), even though I would call some progress a step back in evolution...
My PC is running almost all day long as an answering machine, so when a friend told me about this program I thought it a good idea not to waste calculating power.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that earth cannot be the only place life happened to form. Since the Universe is that big, even the small chance of life forming will happen several times. But I have doubts that mankind will ever really contact such life. Ways of communication are much to slow for that, and besides, looking at the age of the Universe, mankind is young and S.E.T.I. even younger. I don't know how chances are, to receive a ET-lifesign within a couple of years maybe mankind even does not exist long enough to receive one.
But I think the discovery of traces of life will be a great thing if it happens. It will definitely have great consequences for the view of ourselves. Maybe we will learn about the development of a species until its final extinct, hopefully to prevent common mistakes and survive longer. Maybe we will find new technologies, not necessarily from those cultures but just trying to improve looking for them.
I dont really think, that we need to send a specific beacon spaceward, since our planet is emmiting Radiowaves in such ammounts that an intelligent lifeform has enough chances of detecting us. (hopefully they won't judge us by or talkshows or propaganda broadcasts of some (not all past) intsitutions.) wouldn't it be funny if the first decoded ET message would be a public broadcast about search for Intelligence in space?
I run S.E.T.I.@home since I would be happy to find traces of E.T.I., think it is a great idea to improve international community, too. And besides, my PC is running as an answering machine and fax anyway...
