Personal background
I live in Rancho Cordova, CA, and work as a Lineman at the Rancho Murieta Airport. I'm also a cartoonist, the creator of the online comic "Real Life", which has been running for over three years on the internet. I'm heavily into computer graphics, as well as computer building and repair (though I don't enjoy the act of working on computers, the end result is worth it).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There are a few questions posed as possible topics for this area - rather than choose one, I'll just answer all three. :)

1. Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? I'd say that it's almost a mathematical impossibility for it NOT to exist. I also think it's pretty naieve for anyone to believe that out of the entirety of the universe (sit and contemplate it sometime...this place is BIG) only one planet has life. I don't really think we can even begin to contemplate the benefits or dangers of the discovery of life, but I can say that the discovery of life on a planet other than our own would mean a HUGE change in the mental state of people on Earth.

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? Or course. I think it's stupid to simply assume that an off-world species would be dangerous, especially considering that we can effectively rule out life in our immediate vicinity. As for what we should send...that's not something I could be the judge of. I've heard many opinions, but a mathematical message seems to be the most logical option.

3. I run SETI@Home because I think there are a lot of underfunded and undersupported groups, and SETI is one of them. SETI needs a lot more support, because it's an extremely important endeavor, in my opinion. Thanks to distributed computing, SETI has access to one of the most powerful computer networks in the world, and the more data we can crunch for them, the better.
