Profile: Karoliina Salminen

Personal background
I was born in 1974 in Finland. I work as a software engineer for
a big company. I am running the seti@home on my Linux
server at home (it is a AMD Athlon 1700XP). I am a hobbyist musician
/indie artist on my sparetime, I do old-school synthesizer/space -music (for more information, please see my home page http://www.karoliinasalminen.com ).

Space have been one of my
interests since I was a child. One of my biggest dreams is
to someday go to space by myself. I am hoping that the emerging
space tourism industry will someday provide me possibility to
fullfill my dream.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial
intelligence exists but I wonder if searching through radio waves is the
right way to look for it. I mean that a advanced civilization may have
invented a advanced communication method that is not based on radio waves
and is unnoticeable to primitive human beings allthough I am hoping
that they would use the radio waves with the expectation that the receiver
is not necessarily overly advanced with technology.
I think that proving that extraterrestrial life exists, would
really change the World and how the people think and treat each
other. This is the change to improve the World.

I also believe that it is possible that if some advanced
species have received human signals, they may remain
silent before they feel that humans are ready to make
the contact. They may not want to interfere the development
of human culture before it reaches the level of
interstellar space travel.
