| Personal background |
My name is Pat and I live with my husband in Spain. I am a retired teacher. My main interests are cosmology and stargazing. I use my computer to research and read about this. I am lucky in that we have a solarium where I can take the telescope and have some great views on clear nights. To the west it is very light polluted but to the East and south are very good. I am also fortunate in that I can spend long periods of time outside without getting too cold. I belong to the Vega Baja Astronomy Group and we all meet once a month to chat about what we have been observing.
I maintain a website with a webcam so my family and friends from the UK can see our garden and check on the weather. Its pointing towards the swimming pool and bird table. We don't have many different varieties of birds. They are mainly sparrows and wagtails. At this time of the year (January)there is a lone robin and a pair of blackbirds.

| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I have always thought that "we are not alone". It may be impossible to detect another civilisation out in the cosmos with the technology to send us a message but what is the harm in trying? I run SETI on 2 machines and have done since 1999. I do however also run other projects through BOINC.
I truly believe that sometime soon, we will find all the building blocks for life on another planet. The new exsolar planets being discovered in our own galaxy are very exciting and hopefully just the tip of the iceburg.
The evidence that many stars are accompanied by planets, the detection of organic material in the circumstellar disks of which planets are created, and claims regarding microfossils on Martian meteorites is wonderful... I wish I worked in an observatory! |
