Personal background
Sr. Systems Analyst. for a major Fortune 500 company. I've been processing Seti since 1999 with ever increasing CPU horsepower. Member of Ars Technica's Team Lambchop. I have a beautiful wife, a beautiful daughter, and another little bun in the oven. My main PCs both at work and at home are P4 2.8GHz with HT running Win XP Pro. I also run it on some workstations ranging from 1GHz PIIIs to the P4 2.8GHz and even some Centrino laptops which really crank on Seti (3 hours/work unit).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Definitely. Simple probability suggests that at some other planets out there must have evolved intelligent life of some sort. Hopefully, we'll start discovering each other when everyone is good and ready to handle it and not before.
Benefits could be shared knowledge, and experience and a sense that we all need to pull together. The dangers I think are that either we or they won't be ready for contact and react in some negative fashion or other leading to conflict.
I believe we have already launched various beacons (IE: Voyagers I, II, and others) and that wth the way we broadcast radio and TV, if some other life form was to look for us, they should have no problem finding us. I really don't believe that additional beacons are necessary unless they are for some other purpose in addition to being a beacon.
I run SETI@home out of sheer curiosity to know if there is anybody else out there and the fun of CPU-based competition! I think the project is a brilliant way to get Radio-telescope data processed in an expediant and cost-saving manor.
