Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I enjoy being a part of SETI@home, and consider it a worthwhile exercise, quite apart from any positive results obtained. Seeing the universe, it seems quite narrow in view not to consider all that might be out there.

I work late hours, and often leave my computer running to accomplish some silly thing I set it to do before I leave. I feel a bit better knowing it then goes on to do something worthwhile after it is done.

I am a realist about the real likelihood of contact with intelligent aliens. those same huge numbers that tell you that even if only one in a million . . . etc, there must be millions of other civilizations. What no one points out is that if there have been less than a trillion spacefaring civilizations in the universe, which expanded their spheres of influence at less than light speed, for less than a million years, on the average, we must expect the nearest one to be more than a million light years away. It's a big universe.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't look, though.
