Personal background

Hi

My name is Bret and I am a web designer and magazine publisher from Denver, CO. Since I just became a 1%er (more work units than 99.002% of all users) I figured the time has come to do this.

I have spent most of my life trying to do what I want. I took up photography about years ago. Since I was in the Navy at the
time I was able to get a wide variety of pictures from all over the Pacific and Indian oceans. As time has gone by I found
that I prefer action and sports photography the best. I am able to capture more human emotion that way.

More recently I have taken up drag racing. There just isn't anything quite like the "on the edge" chaos of
screaming down the track. And since Denver is the home of Bandimere
Speedway I have a world class track to race on. Right now I do bracket racing. Someday when I can afford the heavy
horsepower I may go to the head to head stuff.

It was only natural to combine these two hobbies. Eventually this led Patrick and I to starting our own
racing magazine. Our product is called Mountain States Racing. While we do cover all types of racing we tend to focus on the
drags. Publishing a magazine and maintaining the web site has turned out to be a more than full time job. But the money is
very good.

Since my lifestyle is very hectic I needed to find some sort of release. I have been pleasantly surprised
to discover that I really enjoy gardening. This is great for slowing your mind down.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to make a living with things that I love to do. I can only hope for the same for all of you.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Of course there is extraterrestrial life. Just look at our planet for the proof. Look at how many
different types of life can be found here. And how different types mutate from the same species once separated by some
geological feature.

Now scientists are saying that there is ice on Mars. So that means that there is water there no matter how
insignificant the amount may turn out to be. Add oxygen and things will grow. That means life. We would be pretty conceited
to think that this is the only planet with the right conditions for things to sprout.

The big question is how will we find it. The most likely answer is that someone will come and visit us.
Hopefully they will be friendly. I figure it is about a 30-70 against. As Alan Dean Foster said, we are just a bunch of
fighting monkeys. We may be considered a threat by other races out there. So even normally benign aliens may decide that
we are too dangerous to allow to go on.

The benefits and dangers are obvious. They will either help us, enslave us or wipe us out. And since they
will extremely more technologically advanced we won't have much say in the matter.

There are two main that reasons I run SETI@home. The first is that I want to know whos out there. The
second is that I like the idea of being part of something that is this big without being forced to. I suggest SETI@home to
every computer user I meet. The more the merrier.
