Profile: Mike Owen

Personal background
I have been a software developer for over 20 years now. My interest in science began at an early age. I have received degrees in Physics, Mathematics and Music. Currently I run a small consulting firm offering b2b solutions for businesses in southeast Michigan, USA. I have always had a great concern for science and ethics.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I accept the mathematical probability that intelligent extraterrestrial life is most likely pervasive throughout the known universe. Probability being what it is, we may find it in an hour or another millenium. But no discovery is possible until we have at least taken that first step. SETI represents a first step to me.

I believe the natural EM emissions from our global culture (radio, TV, microwaves, etc.) are a beacon onto themselves for other cultures which may also be listening. In time, they will detect our presence.

I run SETI at home because I wish to be included in the small steps humanity has taken to reach a greater consciousness and perception of reality. It is a small step indeed, but many such steps together have a significant cumulative effect.

When we do detect and confirm signals from extraterrestrial cultures the effects will be profound. It is this possibility that motivates me in this effort.
