Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes. Discovery depends on the level of intelligence, if they've been here a billion years longer than us, they'll discover us first. I forsee wonderful science benefits, but the sociological ramifications will be devastating.

2) Yes. Basic element definitions and mathematical equations to prove we know something, and of course a stellar map showing where we are.

3) To help out. I believe it is a worth while endeavor. Too many to list here, one that comes to mind first would be a crossband filter/audio decoder built into the client to play any audible sounds found in the signals while the client is running.
