Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Do I believe in ET? I don't think there's anything super special about us in the scheme of things, but that doesn't automatically lead to any conclusions about green guys. Yeah, yeah, Drake's equation, "awful waste of space" Carl Sagan, I know. But I think if you feel strongly about it one way or the other then it's a certain type of faith you're operating on. I'm happy to say 'I don't know.' It'd be exciting to live through a discovery like that, though. The whole process is just interesting
2. Beacon. Sure. Send... uh, The Simpsons. There's pretty much an episode about everything we got.
3. I had an account in 1999 that ran 130 units. I started over and forgot the old password, plus the email account is invalid now. Oh well, shouldn't take a year to do 130 units this time around. I run it cos I like having something going on in the background and occasionally saying, "ooo, a triplet with a power of 12... i don't know what that means." It's novel to be a part of such a large distributed processing endeavor, plus competitions, statistics, and community all make it interesting.
Suggestions: This is one of the most successful examples of distributed processing, and also of a volunteer online community. Take a look at CMU work on building online communities and encouraging contribution. |
