Profile: Claire Barnes

Personal background
I am 31 years old and am from the north east of England. I work part-time as a veterinary nurse/receptionist and the rest of the time for my parents catering businesses.
I'm afraid I lead quite a boring life outside of work, I am a confirmed "mouse potato", ( ie I spend far too much time in front of my computer! ) I have three dogs whom I adore and I take the greatest pleasure in seeing them run and play, be that on a field on a bright summers day, or in the depths of winter with snow on the ground.
I have many interests, ranging from crime scene science to Formula 1 motorsport. I read voraciously, mainly psychological thrillers but I have been known to read the odd trashy novel for a bit of light relief!
I am currently learning to speak Italian as I have a fascination for that country, the food and the way of life.
I have to admit to also being a devout fan of science fiction, Star Trek ( the next generation was the best one! ) and especially Stargate SG1.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
OK, do I think that extraterrestrial life exists? My answer to that would be that I hope it does! I find it hard to believe that we are totally alone in the universe and that we came into being through a random convergeance of events, that has been unrepeatable elsewhere in the vastness of space.
I think that eventually given time and obviously enough funding, we will discover some form of extraterrestrial life, sentient or otherwise. I hesitate to speculate as to when, but for my own selfish curiosity I hope it is within my lifetime.
It is precisely for these reasons that I run SETI@home, scientific curiosity, hope and yes, to give my computer something to do!
