Personal background
I am a 32-year-old Technology professional from NYC. I have been an avid astronomy lover for most of my life. I visit the Astronomy Picture of the day website every day. I gaze at the stars in wonderment every night and hope to possibly be an astronomer some day.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it is impossible for extraterrestrial life NOT to exist. How would it be possible that we have the only planet capable of sustaining life? I believe it will be discovered, but only when we are deemed fit to make the discovery. I personally would not make contact with us at this time if I were an alien race. Although, if I were looking for a planet to invade? In my opinion, we are the prime target. To me, the dangers of the discovery would be the possible hostility some may direct toward the alien race due to fear. The benefits could be limitless. As to whether we should send a beacon? It's a crapshoot. On the one hand, I think it is a wonderful idea. Let someone know we are here, we are looking, and we want contact. On the other hand, we could be asking for trouble. But, I think it's a risk worth taking. We should simply send a message that represents our desire to make contact. I am contributing to the SETI at home project in hopes that I will be part of a discovery. I think it's great that we (the public) are being allowed to participate in what could be a historical event.
