Personal background
Hi
My name is Ian, I am 53 years old, and live in Shropshire, England, a few miles from the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, for which I wrote a public AV display. My main hobbies are foreign cultures, history and music; gardening was but i now have limited mobility. Mainly I play organ/keyboard, but have been known to torture people with my cello and guitar.

I spent many years as a social worker - don't ask me if ET life exists - i know it does - but now build computers to keep the wolf from the door - or at least half way down the hall.

I would be delighted to hear from any other setiathome people. anywhere.

Best wishes to everyone.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Logic dictates that it must exist, though that which is logical is not always real. But I believe it does exist - perhaps in sentient form, perhaps at the beginning or end of its existence. How and when we discover (or are discovered by) other life forms - could be today - could be 1000yrs - but I would love to be here! How - I think setiathome is as good as any search method within our capabilities. Perhaps seti is a "now" thing and personal discovery through travel, a "future" thing. All of the UK benefits greatly from centuries of discourse with other cultures - those that have not tried to invade we normally invite in, and have ever done so. (I purposely ignore present and short term political pragmatism). ET life will be no different. There will be ups and downs, but an open mind and a willing heart have always overcome any problems here. Any dangers that might exist come from a closed mind and heart - and of course short term political pragmatism.

2. Yes. Where we are - what we look like and how we interpret physical realities.

3. Because I can, and feel a sense of privilege that I am part of our future, and hope that if it shortens the search by a moment that my contribution is of value. The same applies to the project as a whole. As for suggestions, I am a social scientist - and I did that because evreyone asks me for opinions and no-one asks me for facts - thus avoiding any deep knowledge related to reality - so I don't have any suggestions other than keep going. We have children in part so that we are of tomorrow and that is why we should do this.
