Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Why do you run SETI@home?
I'm interested in SETI because I'm interested in astronomy, ham radio, and of course the age-old question: Are we alone? I think the entire idea of the at-home project is extraordinary and I congratulate the people behind the concept and brilliant execution of it.
aThoughts about ETI
As for ET's - I think the odds are for it. I've never believed that life is rare or unique to this planet. Given the amazing diversity of life on this planet (although I guess on a DNA level, it's not so diverse at all), how can life not develop anywhere conditions are ripe for it. As for intelligent life, well, who knows. But that's what SETI is for, right?
Should we transmit a signal of our own? Sure, why not. In a sense, given all that we do electronically, maybe we already do.
I would like to add that I do NOT believe in UFO's, or ghosts, or alien abductions, ad nauseum. That's the stuff of fantasy and I find it sad it receives so much "credible" press. I'm a long-time skeptic (AKA realist) but I think SETI is an entirely different animal. It's SCIENCE that can change everything we know about our selves, our planet and our place in the universe.a |
