| Hello, I am an Electrical Engineer from San Diego, California, and I'm currently employed on a large pharmaceutical contruction project. I have been a member of The Planetary Society for about ten years now and have been involved in the 1998 and 2001 expeditions to Belize. I'm a singer/songwriter and I play guitar. I love camping and hiking, I enjoy the ocean and the mountains, and I am an advanced skier. One day I am hoping to live and work in space, coming back to the earth to vacation occasionally. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Extraterrestial life has to exist statistically, the signatures of the building blocks are everywhere we look. The questions are, at what point might it be in the evolutionary process, and whether it is located in proximity to us. The answer to these questions will determine whether we can contact this life at all.
If it's too far away, communication as we know it today will probably not be feasable since time and distance are equal in light-years. If it's not advanced enough to even form a communicative process, then there is literally no one to talk to, even though the life is there.
Every night I look up to the heavens and call out to whoever may be listening, and there is no response, except from my neighbors. I have come to the realization that the universe IS teeming with life, but we can't tell via radio signals because we are the first organisms in this cycle of the universe, at least in our corner of the galaxy, to actually achieve consciousness. Because the universe is still relatively young, we might just be the lucky first, and if so, there is no one out there to look up to to fix our problems or hand us advanced technology. We will have to do it all on our own and, as much as I would like to find advanced creatures, this actually sounds more fun to me. |
