Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Seti is a good start and a well executed plan for allowing us to assist, however I don't believe radio waves or patterned frequencies is the right way to search for life out there. It seems we're going at this like we still live in the stone age and expect that others out there would automatically do things exactly as we do. What makes us think they use radio waves, etc at all ? Because we do or did ? There's got to be a better, more up to the minute way to conduct a search. I think we need to ponder the possibilities of what life out there might be like and try to invision the differences that might and probably do exist before jumping to a conclusion on the best way to search, and more importantly, What to search for. I'm glad to help with CPU time, as I do, but feel that there has got to be a strategy.
It seems to me, that every living thing leaves "footprints in the sand" of where it's been and possibly where it is, from greenhouse gases, biological information, debris, cosmic "vapor trails", etc. Putting on a laser light show, or searching for radio waves just seems a little short sighted. Heck, there are continents or at least vast areas here on our own planet where they don't even know what a radio wave is, let alone how to receive one or send one. Same goes for Laser Light shows. I guess if we tried to pick up radio waves or get a laser signal from one of these areas on our own earth, we would jump to the conclusion that there must not be intelligent life there, because they didn't respond by radio or laser. - Seems very, very short sighted to me.
