Personal background
I'm 22 years old and hail from Houston, Texas, one of the hottest cities I've ever known. Other than that, not much about me is exciting. I work as a Sales Manager for Gateway Inc. (yes, the computer company), and am just about to hit 300 units recorded. My highest goal for SETI@HOME is finishing units on a new average in about 10 hours (just a tad longer, actually).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the SETI@HOME project is absolutely phenomenal. I don't know why someone didn't think it up sooner. I remember when I began (back in January) that they were analyzing data from like 1994, and now we're almost caught up to realtime. It makes me wonder what will happen when we DO catch up.

I believe that the SETI program is one of the most interesting projects the human race has going for it. It's one thing to talk about Mars missions, and Moon bases, etc. It's a completely different thing to actually be out there DOING something, like the SETI people are. Were we to find out that we are not alone in the Universe would, for me, completely satisfy me. I think that it's IMPOSSIBLE for us to be the only intelligent life in the Galaxy, let alone the Universe. I hope that one day, we'll be able to find out.

As far as whether we should broadcast our own beacon? Sure, why not. I think that technologically, we don't have the proper tools to make it noticeable to any other intelligence. But it would be fairly interesting if we were to initiate such a beacon, and have another species doing their own SETI project find it. How ironic would that be? But when I think about it, we really should be broadcasting our own signal. It would be kind of hypocrytical not to, wouldn't it. What information should we send? Something like "Hello, we are from the planet Earth. Here's what we're all about, please respond, we're dying to know if we're alone."
