Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The question of life existing beyond earth can be inferred based on the diversity of ecological habitats here on earth. From within superheated rocks to sub-zero ice cores, life abounds. Space, in its infinite glory, holds an infinite amount of stars, dust, planets, galaxies, and possibly universes. It is unreasonable for us to assume that an ordinary planet, in an ordinary system, in an obscure wing of an ordinary galaxy is unique in a Universe that has shown such uniformity. It is just time that obscures the view of ET.

As for transmitting a beacon for others to find, I say not actively. We have been inadvertantly advertising our existance in radio and television since the beginning of the 20th century. We have also advertised our technological advancement with the detonation of nuclear devices, which have sent pulses of distinctive radiation throughout the universe. These events will be detected by any advanced civilization. Whether this is a detriment to our existance or not remains to be seen. After all, the American Indians never intended their entire society to be changed by a happenstance encounter by an Italian sailor. Food for thought.

Running SETI at home is the first line of defense against whatever. Ignorance is no excuse. We must strive to learn as much as possible.
