Personal background
I've recently joined the local university here where I live (in South Africa), the University of Cape Town. I was horrified to see that though they had gone to the trouble of registering a group, the group had 0 members and 0 completed workunits. Of course I had to do something about this, so together with a friend we joined the group, giving it a nice starting number of 365 (one for every day...) workunits. We hope to expand this group in the very near future :)

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run seti@home because I like the idea of having really complex calculations happening on my PC all the time, even if they're not programmed by me ;) Whether or not aliens exist is completely inconsequential, the point is having a lot of fun doing FFTs on huge masses of data and bragging that your PC churns out 3 times as many WUs per day than your friend, etc...

If aliens are found they'll probably be very smart (unless they've launched themselves into deep space accidentally), so they'll likely be open to some sort of interstellar agreement of some kind, and world peace should soon ensue. Or not :)

Transmit a beacon. Even if the aliens don't find it, it'll make a fantastic CNN feature.
