Profile: Johansy

Personal background
Hi, my name is Johansy, but I'm known as Alain on Earth (notice how Alain and
Alien look alike). I'm 36 (Earth years) and I live in Ottawa, Canada although
my permanent home address is literally out of this world. I'm an engineer (oh
well, nobody is perfect!) and I specialize in computer security. I married a
lovely Earth woman and we are the proud (but exhausted) parents of two
wonderful (but restless) children. My people have evolved to be quite tall and
sturdy and even though I'm 6'3'' and weight 240 pounds, I'm well below average
on my planet. That's why I could qualify for this mission as an observer on
Earth. Over the years, I have learn to enjoy science fiction and I have to
admit that some of the stuff on Star Trek The Next Generation for example seems
to be coming straight out of archived history files. I believe, as well as
every evolved being in this Universe, that the Universe itself is a living
being and that we are the results of that Universe trying to understand itself.
Let's take humanity for instance. From the initial infinite energy Big Bang to
today, matter has always tried to complexify itself. Particles to atoms to
stars to bigger atoms to stars and planets to molecules to complex molecules to
molecules able of reproduction to organisms to plants and animals to humans to
societies ... What's next? Many evolutionary paths are possible, but the one
that will bring the Universe a step closer to its goal will happen when humans,
as cells working together for the good of the body, learn to work together for
the good of humanity. Evolution of inter-personal communication as in telepathy,
although chaotic at first, would bring humanity closer once shared by all.
Individuality is something that cannot coexist with infinite knowledge.
Maybe the Borgs were right after all? Isaac Asimov's Gaïa is on the way...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think that extra terrestrial life exists? Of course I
do : I'm the living proof of it! But suppose we don't think
this argument is valid, let's look at it from a statistical
angle. The probabilities of a planet developing a
self-conscient life form is not null since we exist.
The Universe is infinite by definition, hence there is an
infinite number of planets in the Universe. Anything
(except 0) times infinite equals infinite! Therefor,
there is an infinite number of planets in the Universe with
intelligent life forms. Hummm? I think infinity is playing
tricks on us! But that's not all. There is an infinite
number of civilizations in an infinite Universe. To find
the average distance between each civilization, we would
normally roughly divide the volume they occupy by the number
of civilizations. In this case, we have to divide infinity
by infinity, which could result in anything (except 0),
including infinity. So, there is life out there, but it
could be an infinity away. Would it help humanity to know
that they are not alone? I doubt it. Salvation and
happiness come from within, not from outside. Should Earth
send a message telling where we are and how weak we are?
It's a gamble. If there is an infinite number of
civilizations out there, there is an infinite number of
bad guys and of good guys. The good guys will say: we
cannot interfere, at most we can observe. The bad guys
will say: well we know what the bad guys will say (we have
so many good examples right here on Earth). Running
SETI@home on my computers gives me a sense of being part of
something bigger. Together, we are always stronger than
the sum of our individual strengths.
