Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. YES! I do believe extraterrestrial life exists. Maybe some of them already live with us but we are not aware of yet. Hummmm..........maybe I am one? :-)
I think, extraterrestrial life has different levels. Some are above our human beings, and some are below us.
As for the more advanced ones, I think maybe some of them already know us but they might not wish to let us discover them, which means to have them discovered would depend on whether they are willing to show up. (they must have very advanced camouflage ability, or they think humans' technology is not high enough to communicate with them or understand them, or they probably even don't think humans are a life form to them just like we don't think stones have life.)
As for the lower level life, we can make reference from the more advanced life to humans. So, be careful you might stamp on an extraterrestrial life sent to earth for whatever reason under your feet! :-)
What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery? hum...... Guess this would lead humans to a totally new era regardless of being good or bad. Possible benefits would be: extraterrestrial friendship or marriage, solutions for power source shortage, health issues, population control, humans breed optimization, etc... The dangers at extreme would be diseases, wars, natural resource loss, humans degradation or even devastation.

2. Yes, It's a good idea to transmit a beacon. If I were the transmitter, I would send information of different things that different things or life forms might think it's a friendly sign. What are considered as friendly signals? Maybe we can use everything (including THINGS that we consider no life) and life form to make references?

3. I run SETI@home because it at least gives one possibility to find extraterrestrial life. I think this project is a good idea. Whenever I have suggestions, will paste here!
