Personal background
I am 23 years old, and currently in my first year of law school. After finishing my four year tour of duty as an undergrad, i spent the summer of 2000 following the band Phish. I went to every show, and drove every inch of the way myself. I believe the longest drive was from outside Pittsburgh, PA to Alpine Valley, WI. The shows in those cities were on consecutive days, so that was a tough drive! At the shows in Noblesville, IN (Deer Creek), a friend left the keys to his car in my backpack. I was less than an hour from Lexington, KY when he called me and told me about it! So, I had to drive back to give him his keys, and then turn right back around again. On the whole I had an amazing time, and it made settling down to work and then go to law school that much easier. In all I have seen 46 Phish shows, and I listen to them all the time (well, when I'm not studying). As you can tell, Phish is a big part of my life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestrial life exists. In such a huge universe, it just seems probable that life has popped up somewhere else. I must say that the prospect of there being any life that is intelligent and advanced enough for us to communicate with is rather dubious. I certainly hope there is. If we were to discover intelligent life, I think it would be through a project such as SETI. It just seems more likely to me that we would stumble across some interstellar beacon than we would actually get a spacecraft close enough to any life in the foreseeable future. I think that the benefits and dangers of discovering life on other planets have been well explored in movies, so I don't think I need to throw my two cents in on that topic. The question of whether we should send a beacon for others to see rests on the more fundamental question of whether society as a whole (as in the whole planet) wants to find (or be found by) extraterrestrial life. Because of the global implications of such an event, I think that somehow a worldwide consensus should be reached (how? and at what cost?).
I run SETI@home because it seems like a very worthwhile way to use my computer. I think that SETI does good work, and I'd like to do what I can to help.
