Personal background
I'm a middle aged man in search of a reason why we're all here. I'm not a religious person, but somehow, the notion that all of this happened by accident seems kind of crazy if you think about it for very long. I guess I'd like to bump into another traveler from some distant world; I think I'd find that reassuring. On the other hand, actually bumping into a little green guy from outer space would probably be the end of me. One never knows until it happens.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
When you consider the vast expanse of outer space, it seems almost ludricous to believe that we're alone. So yes, I believe there are other intelligent life forms out there somewhere. I don't believe humans will ever "discover" other life forms per se, I believe those life forms will present themselves in whatever manner they feel is appropriate, at a time and place of their own choosing. I run SETI@home for the same reason a person stranded on a small deserted island would throw a message in a bottle out into the big blue sea; sooner or later that message will find its way into someone elses hands. I'd like to be the person on the receiving end of an intergalactic message being tossed our way.
