Profile: Matthew G. Hughes

Personal background
I am a 32 year old career Naval Parachute Rigger stationed at NAS Jacksonville Florida. Married with no kids, my wife and I enjoy travel (to enclude scuba diving sites, and to EXCLUDE any place I've been during a deployment) and entertaining.
Additionally I am a motorcycle fanatic and ride whenever the wife will allow (or at least whenever she's not paying attention to my where-abouts). The bike I just sold had a sweet big-eyed alien sticker on the fairing where it nicely covered some scratches from a parking lot spill this spring.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My wife thinks the whole Setiathome thing is a crock... But she still collects Beenie Babies, so what does she know! HA! Me? I know with all my heart there's something out there, and it's just a matter of time before we make contact. Knowing our luck, though, their initial signal reception from us will be the Three Stooges, or Jerry Springer, or God forbid - The View!
Hopefully they'll like what they see enough to send back to us their version of music and theater (in DVD form to make it user friendly, of course). I'd like to see if an alien civilization could finally create a decent recipe for eggplant, a workable replacement for dental floss, a way to get the Redskins back to the Superbowl, or a REAL cure for your average hangover.
All kidding aside, it would be such a profound change to the way we see ourselves to know that there are others listening in on our transmissions. It would be the catylist of change that would perhaps finally unite all people in support of one goal - to interact will others who do not share our common backrounds, fears, mistakes, triumphs, predjudices, memories, desires, dreams.
