Without being a "nut case", I am certain that extra-terrestial life exists in some form or other. Whether this "life" has become advanced enough to send us signals that we can pick up I don't know, nor would I like to venture a guess. IF advanced beings exist and IF they know we are here, we will only learn of it when they wish us to learn of it. We are still too primitive to be able to discover them by chance or purpose. Both benefits and dangers of such a meeting are so many, it makes my head reel.
I believe that we SHOULD transmit a beacon for others to find. Good or bad, the discovery of extraterrestrial life will take Earth a step beyond its current development. Also, it's better to KNOW the truth than to stay in ignorance!
I run SETI@home on 2 computers because I am curious. I believe in knowledge and the benefits thereof. If there IS an ET out there, I want to hear his first "hello"! This project must not stop under any circumstances! Scanning the skies is the only hope we have of gaining knowledge in this area. My only suggestion would be to put a higher profile on this project and get people caught up in the enthusiasm so many of us share. |
