Profile: FloydPinkerton

Personal background
I’m from Portland, OR, 30something yrs old and am a private computer consultant. Computers have been my hobby for about 25 yrs, but it's only been the last 10 yrs or so that they have also been my career. Please feel free to check out my personal home page for the rest of my biography, as well as some other fun stuff @ http://www.floydpinkerton.net . My favorite musicians are The Pink Floyd, as you may have guessed by my screen name.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run Seti@Home because I love the friendly competition and enjoy participating in a large-scale distributed computing experiment. I also find it very useful in benchmarking my computers and burning in the CPU’s. I currently have 12 clients running S@H 24/7 on my little network at home.

Regarding life out there:

Indeed, I can picture in my mind's eye a group of pro-magnum man. Sitting around a fire, watching the sparks fly into the sky like tiny insects. Finally letting their eyes wonder beyond to the stars.

Could they have pondered extra-terrestrial life? I believe they did.

Certainly the American Indian did.

Could they have pondered something was looking back?

Absolutely.

Throughout history mankind has documented an emptiness, or void inside. There is poetry about it, songs written to describe it, even books on the subject.

Some try to fill it with riches or power. Still others try religion or even grasping for a temporary fix like adrenaline or drugs. The list goes on and on.

Personally, I've always filled it with that knowledge that the universe is teeming with life, and that it's probably closer than one might think.

Just an opinion, but I believe that our star is just another little white speck on their landscape of stars, as insignificant as the next. But are they peering up to the sky and wondering if there’s other life?

I hope so.
