Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the odds are promising. We have learned enough to know the possibility exists. It is, I believe, pure arrogance to assume that earth is the ONLY place that beat the odds, when we are obviously such a small part of the cosmos.
As for when? That is a much tougher question. Humans are so impatient, I think, because we live so short a time, but the universe measures time in billions of years. So the answer I submit is simply... Maybe today.
As to the possible benefits and dangers? Everyone has seen E.T., but don't forget Independance Day.
I think we are sending plenty of transmissions to be detected, but it is a bit of worry that they will get to see all those crappy local commercials.
I run this program because no one can get the government to pay for anything that does blow something up.
