Personal background
I am a Canadian curently living near Toronto, Ontario... My educational background is in Electronics Engineering Technology and I specialized in Communications and Digital electronics.
I am currently working as Canadian Technical Lead providing PC and network tech support for a team of technicians across Canada. I have been interrested in computers since they were still big boxes with switches and blinking lights ! My interrest escalated when I got my first Atari 600xl back in the early '80s. I'm not a programmer - more of a 'hardware-geek' and I spend much of my precious spare time trying to make broken stuff work again... to run BOINC of course!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I personally don't (yet) believe that there is other Intelligent life in the universe - I think it's just us, GOD, and the Angels/Demons. Despite the current lack of tangible scientific evidence to indicate that there -is- intelligent life on other worlds, that doesn't necessarily rule anything out.
Also, being a Christian (but certainly not 'religious') I am aware of the spiritual implications that are implied by the possibililty of the existence of ETs. Perhaps what people perceive as Alien encounters, visions, manifestations, etc. are really just Secret GOvernment hi-tech, or the Devil's Demons playing tricks on us. After all, their sole purpose is to do whatever they can to lead us away from a true knowledge of our Creator. If they can create a pre-occupation with something other than on God and his plans for our lives (ETs for example) - then they are just doing their job.

I'll agree that, seeing that there is virtually an almost infinite number of stars out there, it does at first *seem* reasonable to believe that statistically there may be other planets capable of hosting intelligent life out there. However, without any tangible evidence, it is still must be just as likely that we are one-time unique - no accident, and having no 'cosmic siblings'. Since we still don't have any solid evidence either way, it all really comes down to a matter of faith; whether that be a faith in a GOD as the intelligent Creator, or faith in the statistical assumptions of chance and 'possibility' - it still comes down to FAITH in something.

It has been said that, "if it really is just us, seems like an aweful waste of Space." That notion bothers me a bit because it implies that we humans have any right to determine what 'waste' is? Why do we always think that everything should revolve around US and OUR opinions regarding value and purpose of things outside of ourselves? Maybe GOD created it all for HIS OWN reasons, and loved us enough that he wanted to share a little glimpse of the awesome power of his greatness with us - another one of his intricate creations. Just a thought... There are 2 sides to every coin.

Anyway, being a scientist at heart, I still am open to the possibility that there may in fact be intelligent life out there; and I am excited to be able to assist in the pursuit of the truth in any way I can.

Besides, I am also a strong advocate of Grid/Distributed Computing (of a helpful nature - no more Beagle or Conficker viruses PLEASE !) and I am totally engrossed in the whole SETI@home project!! The home PC that only surfs the web a few hours a week "seems like an aweful waste of Space (and CPU!)" lol.
