Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe without a doubt that extraterrestrial life exists. Intelligent life on earth has only been around for 10,000 to 40,000 years. Our sun is very young and will be able to support life for another 5 billion years. I believe that not only is there intelligent life out there, but it is arrogant for us to think that humans could be considered intelligent in comparison. When I think about how far the world has changed in the past 50 years, I can't even begin to imagine what we will accomplish in the next billion years... 2 billion years... where will we be then (if we don't destroy ourselves first). There are billions of stars in the universe that are much more mature than ours and that will have been able to support life for much longer. If we do discover life out there, the benefits of the wisdom that they may possess would be impossible to imagine. The only thing that scares me about finding extraterrestrial life is how humans will capitalize on it and use this newly found knowledge to exploit each other. What twisted way will we use it to further destroy our own world?
