Profile: TonyWilk

Personal background
Software/Hardware designer, Pyrotechnician, Gyro pilot (nearly!) and Director of ECM Systems Ltd who design and manufacture electronics for Bingo and Casinos.

On the rare occasions when I have some free time, I enjoy shooting and blowing things up! I'm a member of the British Western Shooting Society and am also a director of Starfire Pyrotechnics (although the ridiculous cost of insurance has just about wiped us out this year).

I'm 40-something, married to Dinah and we have two daughters, Jen and Jess, who are both at University at the moment.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I reckon "ET" is out there somethere (probably 1000's of 'em) and I'd like to think we'll detect some signal within the next few years - although the best chance will probably be in 20-40 years when earth's early RF 'noise' reaches other worlds and something replies.

Based on our civilisation, I guess that there is only a period of about 50 years during which simple communications can 'leak' off the planet, after that, more sophisticated communications would be very difficult to detect - unless you specifically send a "Hello" beacon.

I would be in favour of a "World Beacon", or several, the more the merrier!

In the mean time, I'll run SETI@home on all my machines - at least it stops 'em from getting bored.
