Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ET is out there, somewhere in time and distance. We (the human race) may get lucky and we may discover that there is other intelligent life out there before we destroy each other or live our existance. Probabilites are just that probabilities! There is a chance; however small, that we may cross the path of another set of intelligent beings. The benefits of discovering ET are innumerable, but mostly, it would make us look up instead of bickering between ourselves. The dangers of such a discovery we may have "missed the boat" or window of opportunity that it may become irrelevant. "So there is life...whoopee. Too bad they are a million light years away!"
Should we transmit a beacon? Not! We transmit only if there is a change that someone will hear us. The information that we should transmit (even though we've been doing it for decades)should be music...rock and roll! Who ever listens on the other end will say that we've gone above zeroes and ones!
But some of us are forever optimist...the glass is half-full...we may hit the million-dollar jackpot!! That is why I run (one in 2.5 million) SETI @ home. I love the project, but we need to market it on a regular basis. Try Discovery Channel on a constant basis to talk about ET and beyond.
