Profile: Jonathan Stanley

Personal background
My name is Jonathan Stanley. I live near Ocala, Florida where I was born and raised. I became interested in computers in 1980 when I was 11. The first computer I ever used was a TRS-80 model 1 with 2K of RAM. I quickly learned programming on it and went through a range of systems including the Tandy Color Computer, TI-99/4A, Zentih Z-100, and at least a dozen PC based systems since about 1985. My first PC ran at 8MHz. I then went to a 386SX/16MHz. Each of my first 2 computers required full bank loans to purchase them. Now, my current PC runs at 2GHz and I simply do an upgrade every couple of years to keep it "current".

Over time I became skilled at programming, repair, and technical services. My best friend and I formed PC Specialists in 1990 here in Marion County Florida. In 1992 he went back to school and I purchased his portion of the partnership. I have been running PC Specialists myself for the last 10 years and have watched my company and the PC industry grow. As of this writing I am 34 years old, have a wife and son, and we all enjoy watching shooting stars, looking at planets, stargazing, and going to astronomical science centers around Florida.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have always loved science fiction, both books and movies. Honestly I started running SETI simply because I needed a new screen saver. But after I thought about it I decided there really wasn't any reason NOT to search the skies during my PC's idle time. My familly raised me in a very religious environment, and I must say personally my conviction is way more oriented towards God as a creator rather than evolution. However, I believe there is a place for SETI in both lines of thought. After all, we know God has created angels, and I suppose if one of them showed up here on Earth or a distant planet that to us he would appear alien. Actually the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence is simply looking for life beyond Earth. I already believe that exists in the form of God and his angels and would not be surprised at all if we found it.

I also personally believe that it would be wrong for us humans to think that we are the only planet based creation that God created. There are so many billions of stars out there that it only seems logical that other races of beings, perhaps even humans, do exist.

I would love to find proof of life within my lifetime. Whether that happens or not, I firmly believe in my creator and his creation throughout the universe!
