Profile: MikeL

Personal background
Digital technologies analyst at Gartner.

Interests: the web, guitar, cycling, space sims, space, climate change... 3d reconstruction and visualisation, semantic web and neural networks.

PhD in Neuroscience (Learning and memory): qualified Human Anatomy teacher (but the web is more fun).

Married, 3 kids, live near Oxford, England, yet to make any .com millions.

Switched over to Boinc 19 Sept 2005.

Now spend a fair amount of time in Elite:Dangerous, a 1:1 simulation of the galaxy with an exploring/trading/fighting game expanded from the original Elte of 1984. Say o7 to CMDR Tannhauser if you're in there.

Most crunching is done on my main PC. A self build in 2012 and still going strong with upgrades. Main card is a 980Ti running at 70% to reduce heat, and a Core i7 running similarly on all 8 vcores. At 100% I've had nearly 25K average work out of it, but I don't want to melt it so it's throttled. This PC is mainly used to play Elite as above, and occasional FPS/Adventures such as Skyrim and Witcher 3. I manage a few websites via it too, but 90% of the time its just crunching and warming the house with the byproduct.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I don't think we are likely to discover civilisations unless another advanced one is near us and feels we are worth the effort.
The size and age of the galaxy (never mind the universe!) seems weighed against a meeting. However, we have to try.
I run Seti because its far more useful and meaningful than Flowerbox.
All power to the project, but it needs at least 2 more telescopes...Borrow Joddrell for a few years?
