Hi I am Werner and have been working for United Nations these past 10 years around the world. Now I have finally settled down and are for the moment working in Sweden.
I think sharing computer power like this to help the science community is a great way to be part of our common future.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Pure mathematics suggests that somewhere in space extraterrestrial life must exist. If it doesn’t it would be a terrible waste of space.
When and how we will discover extraterrestrial life however is a totally different question. Searching for it, like SETI projects, would be like searching for the needle in the haystack. Personally I would find it more likely that we are discovered by more highly advanced extraterrestrial life before we discover them. However, searching for the needle gives a much higher success rate than not searching for it. So I think the fact that we are searching is a good idea.
Benefits and danger of a discovery like this can break down into 1. We are not alone 2. Global Panic. The discovery that we are not alone will settle a question that we have been asking our self from the beginning of time. Global Panic will come because of the paranoid way of thinking humans have and that we don’t have any defence against a space invasion.
2. The question about if we should transmit a beacon for others to find depends on the point of view we are looking at. From a science point of view we tend to see high technology and cure of all deceases. From a military point of view we have no defence against an invasion, we have not spread to other worlds and therefore we have to relay on earth not being detected.
3. I run SETI@home for the whole purpose of giving a helping hand to find that needle in the haystack. I think the project is great but are kind of afraid that the bands we are searching in are way to narrow. Personally I would like to see the whole SETI project be given more funding and more resources.
Using home computers for calculations were a stroke of genius.
