Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do you run SETI@home?
Why? Mostly because I think it is good cause. There is ETs out there - probability states there must be. If we don't look for them we will never find them. Finding them would be nothing less than the greastest thing happened to man-kind for centuries, so giving a bit of my resources for this seems worthwhile.

aThoughts about ETI
I strongly approve at projects trying to establish contacts with ETs. However, if we are to be a bit realistic it is extremely unlikely to happen if they were out there and even fairly close by. Think about it, from Earth only very few signals have ever been sent out strong enough with the hope for any body to find it. If we assume that ETs will act the same way it seems unlikely that they will point a transmitter towards us at the time we listen there. But let us for a moment assume that we actually found a signal. Due to your requirements that the signal should be present the next time the dish comes by that spot, it is likely that any signal being transmitted towards us has stopped. Signals sent from Earth wasn't sent for long periods of time, either. In conclusion, I think it is pretty hopeless - but if we don't try we will certainly never succeed...a
