Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?

Yes.

If so, when and how will humans discover it?

We'll probably be discovered before we discover them.

What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

Better understanding of the universe and the creation of life. It would be interesting to see if every earth-like planet resembles life as it does on this planet. That's not far fetched is it? If every earth-like planet has the same atmosphere, gravity, water, air, a sun and all that, wouldn't it contain the same life as our planet? As for dangers, well, we all know how some humans think. If we can't be peaceful on our own planet, imagine how some people will discriminate against humans on a foreign planet!

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?

Yes.

If so, what information should we send?

If our transmission is received by some planet that's not as advanced as we are, they might freak out and start worshipping our little signal, calling it a message from the heavens or something. Something basic and simple, but structured.. mathematical patterns.

Why do you run SETI@home?

I want to help out with anything related to space exploration.

What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?

I just think it's really cool that us little people can actually make a difference in the project, albeit a very small difference. No suggestions.
