Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I became interested in SETI about 12 years ago when the Planetary Society began its SETI program. Then in 1999 I found SETI@home by "chance" when I was browsing the Internet.

I do believe there is life out there. Not sure if it is intelligent; and if so, how advance. Do not believe there are near nor visiting our planet.

We must be clear between believe and science (sorry but religion is faith -> believe); and must be very cautious with pseudoscience also. The SETI@home project is a scientific approach to resolve the ETI "doubt".

If there is ETI, and there are willing to be detected is a matter of patience; if they are not sending there an special signal the detection could be done but with a broadband system, more sensitive and more CPU time (technological issue).

If an ETI signal is detected (confirm, etc.) it would help to confirm many scientific theories. Very dangerous for the religions (remember when the earth was not more the center of the universe?), how can the religions explain this discovery. It would take years, and maybe generations to achieve this strong discovery.

At this moment we are sending our own signals (tv, radio, radar, etc.), but they are broadband, low power and not in the best band (too much attenuation). If there is a ETI civilization with good instruments they may detect us. We can help by sending the "correct" signal. We must send the signal when we are prepared to achieve any consequence of our action. The first step would be to list the social consequences of a radio contact an then those of a possible "total" contact.
