Personal background
Always loved looking at the stars...i mean, you look up and you just can't fail to notice the beauty of it all. Puts life in perspective, evolution is a marvellous thing. I'm basicaly a bad speller that has too much time on their hands, and an interest in finding intelligence other than human. I like mountiain biking (i'm up around the north york moors, north east united kingdom), plus sunbathing as much as possible. I like the odd cracker / hack story in the news (good to see microsoft / AOL getting it where it hurts..), a good glass of merlot, the sight of a nice body (in leather/latex/nothing at all...) and generally taking the mick. Just getting into super bikes, plus trying to get motivated to go back to the gym after an undisclosed leave of absence..
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
well, do et's exist...probably, how will we discover it, oh, probably secretly then hush it up...
I know its cynical but also a realistic point of view. Mass panic would probably breakout if aliens suddenly turned up at number 34, the winters, peterborough....
My own theory goes like this..intelligence evolves/emerges from any complex system. Humans have not (cosmologically speaking) been here that long. Take another planet where no global extinction events have wiped out/set back the progress of evolution, you have intelligence occuring waaaay before humans ever got on the scene. Perhaps just enough difference for them to travel / map out the universe and discover us. I do not believe we will discover them, they will discover us. So, i guess that leads onto the point of instead of (aswell as, be it how you may) searching for something out there, we should start sending something out there to anounce our presence...I don't know if this is wise or not (can take 50/50 on this if you want...)
Beacons? can we send all the boy bands into space in a hermetically sealed container....just a thought. Yes, beacons should be sent out on a tradjectory that (to the best of our knowledge) will not take it near any object in the sky. Content...perhaps an example of each of our methods of communication, alphabets of all know languages, a map of where we are (in relation to some pre determined point/points (for triangulation)), the earths icq number...
As to why i run seti at home, well, it would be nice to have a hand in discovering evidence of and alien signal. Be a great story to tell down the pub on a friday night..(and the other day i discovered an alien civilisation...)
well, thats me...
tyler durdan, north east uk....
