Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there is life out there. Since we only have life on earth
for comparison, I'm not really sure what we might find (or what might find us).
I think that SETI is a good program but we are assuming that Technology on a
distant planet would have to evolve at least somewhat similarly to our own. We
might actually be receiving signals now but do not know that they are there.

If life is found within our lifetimes, the discovery would probably be done by the
ET life (given our technical limitations). Whether this would be a good thing would
depend on who discovered us (to use a Star Trek analogy: did the Enterprise or the
Klingons discover us?).

One of the most important things that programs like SETI does for us is to keep us
interested in Space. Mars craft landings and the HST do the same thing. The
technology needed for programs often find uses in our ordinary lives. It also
keeps our imaginations going strong. Not only is the possibility of life an
interesting question, so is the question of just what is out there, alive or not.

I run SETI@home on my computer 24 hours a day. It is important for projects like
this to have strong active involvement.
