Personal background
Hi!

I will soon "go over the top", i.e. turning 50, and I'm a retired (10
years now) system analyst/programmer. Now that I don't work any more,
I can devote my time to my computer and book reading. My main book
interests are sci-fi, fantasy, natural sciences (phys., astronomy,
medicine...), the occasional thriller/detective novel, feminist
literature and novels by female authors.

My gender is indeterminate as it "flips" between the female and male
pole - currently it's in the male pole but when I took the picture
of me that's posted in this profile I was in the female pole. Note
the silver pendant in the picture - it is a symbol of the Great Mother
and of the generative powers of women. It also stands for the planet
Venus ("the mirror of the Goddess Venus") and for the element
copper (Cu). In olden times copper was a main export product from my
home country Sweden where I have lived all my life. Currently I'm
living in the university city of Umea which have about 100k inhabitants.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
That e-t *life* exist, that I have no doubt about, but the question
on *intelligent* e-t species living out there, that's another kettle
of fish entirely! :-)

What benefits or dangers a discovery of intelligent e-t's I don't know
but I *know* that such a discovery will have profound consequences.
For one thing, it would set a time-bomb ticking away in the foundations
of at least the three monotheistic religions of the world. The time-
bomb is the notion that humankind was created in the image of some
G*d. If intelligent e-t:s exist, this whole notion of us being the
image of G*d will be seriously challenged.

Another consequence would be that our self-pride and self-importance
would be pushed down a few pegs and that we as a collective would
become more humble towards the world we live in.

Why I'm running S&H? Because I would like to know if there are other
intelligences out there before it's time for me to return to the
womb of the Great Mother, there awaiting a new rebirth. My tiny
contributions of CPU cycles will help towards this goal - and it
prevents my computer (PIII/800MHz, 128MB, 2x8.4Gb SCSI Ultra2 HD)
from going lazy and fat :-)
